This book takes the relatively unique approach of not just presenting an overview of a famous researcher's best-known ideas, but tracing their development through his educational biography. John Heritage grappled with an immense undertaking in presenting Garfinkel's development from inquisitive student to pioneering sociologist. The writing style in this book is rather dense, and if you are reading it without a background in sociology, it may seem like heavy going. But with some perseverance, the ideas and their significance become clear, and it is well worth the work to gain a better understanding of this brilliant mind. ( )
