( ) This memoir follows two narrative threads. The first one is Vargas Llosa's recollection as a child growing up in Piura with his mother and grandparents. He fast forwards decades later to recount his chaotic and often absurd experience as a presidential candidate in the 1990 Peruvian elections. He wrote about his childhood in a fond, hopeful tone, extending his narrative to his early attempts at journalism and fiction writing. It's amazing how he can precisely trace his inspirations for many of is novels, whether it his from news articles, a brothel of his youth, or memories of his father. A direct contrast is the tone of the election chronicles. There are some instances of great humor especially about the mishaps and embarrassments he experienced in the campaign trail. As it continues however, there is only a cynical realization for Vargas Llosa that the optimistic reforms and alternative politics he is trying to offer the Peruvian people are things that the citizens themselves may not be ready to accept. A very enjoyable and lively book. Certainly a top ten in my favorite books list. no reviews | add a review
