... Fire and Catching Fire, as well as The Graveyard Book, Wake, Marcelo in the Real World, Thirteen Reasons Why, Dairy Queen, and When You Reach Me. Two mystery series I read were outstanding in 2009: Stief Larsson's, starting with The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, and Louise ...

#80, Milda-TX, I'm so glad that your daughter enjoyed Dairy Queen! #81, I'm glad that you looked at and liked Bayou. I hope that you find a copy of Skin Folk and enjoy it as well.

... by Leslie Connor, which looks like a very good young adult novel that I hadn't heard of. From my library, I recommend Dairy Queen by Catherine Gilbert Murdock, a young adult novel whose main character D.J. will stick with you.

You aren't helping me keep to my resolution to buy no more new books until I read half of what I own. Yesterday I bought Dairy Queen and The Maze Runner :)

... and lots of laughs, don’t hesitate to check out Catherine Gilbert Murdock’s books about D.J. Schwenk, starting with Dairy Queen. I’m sad that the series has to end, but beyond satisfied at how Murdock elegantly ties everything together for a hopeful future. This is a series that should ...

#37: Just a little trivia: Catherine Gilbert Murdock, author of Dairy Queen is Elizabeth Gilbert's sister. In Eat, Pray, Love, Elizabeth Gilbert refers to her highly accomplished sister quite often.

Just finished Dairy Queen by Catherine Gilbert Murdock, about a tough, honest farmgirl in Wisconsin, and liked it a lot.

Happy birthday to both of you! >kiwiflowa I finished Dairy Queen and liked it a lot. I think you'll particularly enjoy getting to know the main character, D.J. Next up is The Girl Who Played with Fire.

I'm in small town Wisconsin with farmgirl D.J. in Dairy Queen.

... executive. Finished The Lost Symbol - well done diversion, although a bit long on the philosophizing. I'm reading Dairy Queen by Catherine Gilbert Murdock, a YA title, and Partners in Crime by Dame Agatha.

... an author my daughter recommends (she loves books, but also purses, and might have trouble choosing between the two!), and Dairy Queen by Catherine Gilbert Murdock, a YA title that looks good.

There's also a thrid book in the Dairy Queen series due to be released in October. It's called Front and Center. From reading the description of it, it looks like it might feature more about DJ's love life than the Off Season did. Sdbookhound, looking at your library, I'm not sure if you' ...

... Shanahan--I'm such an advocate for this book--it's funny and entertaining, but also pretty touching I thought. Dairy Queen and The Off Season by Catherine Murdock

I also just finished Dairy Queen and The Off Season by Catherine Murdock. Loved them both and can't wait for the third one in a few months. Now reading The Luxe

Just finished with: The Awakening by Kelley Armstrong Dairy Queen and The Off Season by Catherine Murdock Wintergirls by Laurie Halse Anderson

Just finished Princess Ben which was pretty good - not quite as strong as Dairy Queen, but definitely readable. I'm re-reading Bad Prince Charlie next I think, unless the library has something new in.

#53: Dairy Queen looks pretty good. Thanks for the recommendation!

I liked Dairy Queen and the Off Season as well. I just read Whale Talk and it has similarly great dialogue (though not as humorous) as John Green. You might also try Rats Saw God which is a more 90's era high school story, but fun too.

Don't forget, if you like Dairy Queen there is the sequel called The Off Season. That was good as well. I really liked City of Ashes, City of Bones....just a suggestion.

I second The Book Thief, Dairy Queen, and The Hunger Games and will add Graceling by Kristin Cashore to this list.

Hmmmm. . . . Here's what comes to mind, based on what you've said you're looking for: The Book Thief Dairy Queen The Last Exit to Normal The Astonishing Life of Octavian Nothing Maybe one of those will suit you. Good luck!

I'm throwing in two more possibilities: The Amulet of Samarkand and Dairy Queen. All of the suggestions look great so far!

I third the recs for Dairy Queen and The Off Season, they are both contemporary and have female protagonists, but aren't "girly" stories. I also enjoyed Shug by Jenny Han although it might be a little young for 10th grade. Sweetblood by Pete Hautman was also a good story of a ...

A second on Dairy Queen, and the sequel, Off Season is good, as well. I'd also recommend Beauty Shop for Rent by Laura Bowers. To Kill a Mockingbird would pair nicely with In search of Mockingbird for a modern look at an old classic - and it also has a heroine who runs away, shades of Ho ...

Just finished Dairy Queen by Catherine Murdock, which I really liked, though it's not the sort of thing that would usually appeal to me. And, for fun, I read Bhangra Babes by Narinder Dhami, and now I want curry.

I just read Dairy Queen, and I think it does a pretty good job of being a realistic novel that falls in between serious and funny -- it made me laugh out loud at times, but the author is definitely not afraid to tackle (pun somewhat intended, read the book) the big issues.
