104. Salem's Lot by Stephen King
105. Devlin Diary by Christi Phillips I'm quite astounded no one has recommended Salem's Lot by Steve King and The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova. Neither are "young adult", but I don't see where that was mentioned in the original post. I liked Salem's Lot when I read it as a teenager, and remember finding it quite a bit scary. T ... "I'm scared," he said.
Salem's Lot by Stephen King
"What kind of job are you looking for?" I finished Salem's Lot last night. It's not technically YA, but definitely something that could appeal to all ages. It was fantastic.
I started Eragon this morning. I'm only about 10 pages into it because of the ridiculous amount of homework I have to work on, but I should be able to buzz ... I finished Salem's Lot late last night and started Eragon this morning. I have to really limit myself, though, because I have so much schoolwork to do. :S
I adored Salem's Lot, though. I loved Mark and Father Callahan. I've already read King's Dark Tower series, so it was really weird and ... ... tomorrow morning:
Book 11# Dracula by Bram Stoker.
Evidentily a very famous book, I finished reading Stephen King's 'salem's Lot approximately sixteen days ago and in his introduction, or preface if you like, King mentioned that 'salem's Lot was based on his curiosity about what would ... >114 I read 'Salem's Lot last week, and enjoyed it a lot. The ending doesn't disappoint.
This week I just finished Lunar Park (Bret Easton Ellis) and Invisible Monsters (Chuck Palahniuk), and I can't say either was a particular favorite--especially not Lunar Park, which was terrible. ... Still reading Salem's Lot by Stephen King and completely loving it. Hopefully I'll finish it this weekend. I'm swamped with homework and stuff right now, so I don't know. Next, I'll be reading Eragon by Christopher Paolini. :D ... depends on how old you are. To me, we now seem to have two generations of King fans and I am of the older one. I loved Salem's Lot, The Dead Zone, The Stand, Firestarter, Christine etc so much that I read them time and time again and whenever a new King book came out I clutched it ... ... much adored it. I now cannot wait to read the next one. Right now, I"m taking a minor break from YA lit and am reading Salem's Lot. I'll probably go right back to YA after this, though, with City of Bones. I just started Salem's Lot this morning. It's pretty much amazing. :) Just this minute finished 'salem's Lot by Stephen King, yeahh I'm up pretty late. It was a really good, enjoyable read, and I read it a lot quicker than I expected.
I bought a two new books yesterday and I've already read one, it was good but it isn't really a novel, but as it is still a book, I ... ... Guide to the Galaxy, Breakfast at Tiffany's, A Handmaid's Tale, and Juliet, Naked. I'm thinking I'll start 'Salem's Lot or The Road next.
I've been doing an insane amount of reading since I added ebook-reader functionality to my iPod--I end up reading a few pages between ... ... nonfiction called The Purity Myth. I should write a review/essay for it within the next few days...
I am now reading 'Salem's Lot. I am still on The Broom of the System, which is quite good. I need to start a book I borrowed from a friend called A Walk in the Woods: Rediscovering Americ ... Duma Key is a recent favorite for me. 'Salem's Lot, The Shining and The Stand are really good too. ... and took me about two months to read. That was It by the way in case anybody was wondering.
So, here it is:
Book 3# 'salem's Lot by Stephen King.
Yes, yet another famous work, by possibly the most famous book author. Ok, It took about two months, but 'salem's Lot is much shorter, ... Best of 2009:
January
Fiction: 'Salem's Lot and Brother Odd
Nonfiction: His Excellency: George Washington
February
Fiction: Ella Minnow Pea
Nonfiction: John Adams
March
Fiction: Let the Right One In, Drood
Nonfiction: The Lost City of Z
April
Fiction: Jailbait Zom ... ... that I felt like he lost mid-career. If you want to try some other good ones, the classics are a decent start: Carrie, 'Salem's Lot, The Shining. I definitely agree that 'Salem's Lot sets a high bar - it's superb! David Wellington has written a pretty good vampire series you may want to try - start with 13 Bullets. Great thread, folks.
To the OP: 'salem's Lot and Pet Sematary and a couple of the short stories ("Sometimes They Come Back" comes to mind) scared the shit outta me when I first read them as a teenager. Nothing I've read since has had the same effect. Just jaded, I guess.
Also to the OP (& ... Salem's Lot by Steven King ... very similar. He said in Danse Macabre that he bounced ideas against Dracula to see what would come back when writing Salem's Lot (or words to that effect) - here it was like he was bouncing ideas off himself. Wonder how much he was inspired by his mum's story of how he came back pale and ... #175: Eliza, I would start with Salem's Lot. It was King's second book, and it is my favourite of his. The Stand is incredible, but looong (I like the longer edition better, but I am in the minority here), and The Shining and Carrie are both pretty good too.
Glad you liked The Stand B ... ... the list should maybe include some more up to date stuff.
If I could break your 'under 250 pages' rule, I'd recommend 'Salem's Lot which is also a classic and slightly more modern.
I'd also add in Ghost Story, The Books of Blood and (if I thought they could handle it) Off Season. Finally finished up my weekend homework, so I'm still working on Her Fearful Symmetry. Liking it so far. I've got Salem's Lot on deck, which is probably the only Stephen King novel that somehow slipped by me so far, so very excited about that! I'm having oral surgery this week, which ... Anne Rice's INTERVIEW WITH A VAMPIRE; Richard Matheson's I AM LEGEND and HELL HOUSE; Stephen King's 'SALEM'S LOT. Someone on the "Unreliable narrator" thread reminded me of Shirley Jackson's WE HAVE ALWAYS LIVED IN THE CASTLE. Creeepy.
Best Young Adult book I've read in a decade (and I ... 'Salem's Lot and Cycle of the Werewolf
Laurell K. Hamilton's entire catalogue.
I recently started a new one, that I have not finished that seems promising called Night Life by Caitlin Kittredge.
These are all pretty much outside the YA age category, but if middle ... The vampire in Salem's Lot. ... The Lord of the Rings - J. R. R. Tolkien
'Salem's Lot - Stephen King
The Thorn Birds - Colleen McCullough
Which three books would you love to pass down to your children?
The Anne series
The Harry Pot ... ... a great story, he knows his stuff.
My favourites are definitely The Stand - particularily the long edition - and 'Salem's Lot.
... Del Toro and Chuck Hogan...Haven't read a book that has creeped me out in a long time, reminds me a little of Salem's Lot... how the vampires were almost feral like, not pretty and sweet talking
Next up is Ghost Story by Peter Straub... Salem's Lot or The Shining by Stephen King ... as a horror writer. He mentions that he had two books that he was thinking of publishing as his second novel. One was 'Salem's Lot and the other was one that he gave a brief description of called Blaze. I wondered for years what he ever did with that novel. I'm currently re-reading Salem's Lot by Stephen King. God, it is such a wonderful book! :) ... there are certainly repetitious themes and bloat in some of the dozens of King novels, everyone should read The Shining, Salem' s Lot, The Green Mile series, The Stand, The Shawshank Redemption and It at one time or another. ... of other King novels; the seven Dark Tower books are the only King books I've read thus far. I did recently purchase 'Salem's Lot and The Stand, but I haven't read them yet.
I really liked the Dark Tower, as a series. If you do try to take the plunge, my advice is don't make a ... ... with this one because so many people on LT liked it. This is a vampire horror story in the same way as Stephen King's Salem's Lot, not at all like the sexy vampire romances that are currently popular. I enjoyed it well enough and will read the next in the series when it is available. Reco ... ... circa... what? Early/mid-eighties? If I remember right, it was his second or third novel and he submitted both it and 'Salem's Lot to his publisher.
And yeah, that was something reading about the crazy lady with the ax. (Is it ax or axe?) ... about things that go bump in the night. It reminds me a lot of early Stephen King - Christine, The Shining, and Salem's Lot especially - where a normal setting just isn't quite what it seems. The story is filled with sympathetic characters, bad guys and a REALLY big monster. I know ... ... from Ring + unspecified connection to psychic powers. This isn't entirely out of place for a King story. Barlow of 'Salem's Lot was just Dracula in New England after all. Somehow, I don't think it worked that well in this case. ... like his first incarnation of the disease in The Stand and "One for the Road" which gives us a story about the area in Salem's Lot a little while after the novel ended.
Definitely worth picking up if you like to read short stories, and this is probably my second favorite series of ... ... or was Barlow in the mini-series (Nosferatu-swipe that he was) creepier than Barlow in the novel?
Having read 'Salem's Lot recently for the SK group, I do appreciate the book and the original Barlow more, but I still prefer the truly inhuman one from that mini-series.
Hot Fuzz ... Moomin (or should I call you Mama?),
I've liked reading your comments here. It has made me nostalgic for 'Salem's Lot. I didn't like that book back when I first read it decades ago, but the novel grew in my estimation during our group read.
Have you read One for the Road in Night Shi ... ... refers to himself as sounding like Van Helsing - while boning up on old vampire lore, as Van Helsing must have done. In Salem's Lot, Dracula has become part of the vampire canon. ... (or even an updated version of this book with some new chapters - when you think of the re-release of The Stand and Salem's Lot, this is one author who'd get away with it). BUT re-reading this, I agree with CarlosMcRey, that it is just as much about SK's personal take on the horror genre ... ... book that deserved all the praise King heaps on it.
2. Peter Straub readily acknowledges that his admiration of ‘Salem’s Lot was a large influence on Ghost Story, which Stephen King admired so much that he wrote this long section about it in Danse Macabre.
I’m pretty ... ... of fiction. I think the sexual element is inherent in the modern vampire myth, so that even when it's downplayed (as in 'Salem's Lot) it's still to some present, even if only subtly. (That is one objection I'd have to King's designation of zombies as being like vampires, but that's probably ... ... Carmilla was a curious omission.
I find it interesting that he opted to mostly leave the sexual element out of 'Salem's Lot since he felt that after the Sexual Revolution, that aspect of the vampire myth seemed pretty well spent.
I was chuckling on the inside as I read that. I ... ... book was that Stephen King was still getting used to writing thrillers.
