Henry Treece is well known for his children's stories, in the line of Rosemary Sutcliffe but his adult historical fiction remains a relatively obscure branch of his craft.The characters in this work, and the way through them that Treece remembers for us or represents the ancient world, are quite wonderfully drawn: the small, wiry, wholly indomitable Garroch, and especially the generous, open-handed, flame-haired Asa Wolf, are I think without comparison in this genre.Treece was a very talented and self-aware writer, and his 'Notes on Vision and Perception', also included in this volume, contain some of the most perceptive and incisive understanding of the writing process I have encountered (you can get a flavour of the Notes online at:
