I always like this book as a kid, but I wasn't sure if the kids at my storytime would enjoy it. But they did get engaged in the story! I had them walk with their toes in and out and then drag their feet like peter, then we talked about how snow melts when peter saves his snowball--and it worked out great. I enjoyed reading this book, although it was just simple written it was fun. It made me remember when I was young and played in the snow, it brought back memories of me staying out too long in the snow and being really cold. This story is for sure a contemporary realistic fiction type, because all children can relate to this story of the time they went out to play in the snow, and can put themselves in the place of Peter in the story. The illustrations were nice, they were just plain and simple but fit nicely with the story, and they were double-paged pictures and took up the whole page, so it was also a very nice picture book. A fun project for my class would be to have a foot printing session, where each student would have a chance to step in paint and then step on paper for making their very own foot print tracks like Peter did in the snow, so they could relate to the story. Another fun activity would be for the students to build their choice of a snowman or an angel using cotton on poster board, this too would give the class the opportunity of being involved, just without being in the cold snow. The snowy Day is an all-time favorite and believable in its tone. I can see my children doing the same things as Peter on a snowy day. I would read this story to my class to educate students on the differences of the four seasons. It would be an excellent book to read on the first day of winter. I would use this book as a tool to get students to think ahead during reading. I would stop reading the story at the point where Peter puts the snowball in his pocket. I would ask my students what they think will happen to the snow and I would ask them why they thought the snowball melted. This story was about a young boy named Peter who loved Winter. He found many ways to play in the snow and even took a snowball home with him. When it was time for bed, he noticed that the snowball had melted and was sad. When Peter went to bed that night, he had a dream that the sun had taken away something that he loved more then anything..... snow.... But when he woke up he found out that it was just a bad dream, and new snow had fallen. I really enjoyed this story. What amazes me is I remember reading this story as a child, and loved it then. I also loved reading this story, because it told of my favorite season winter. I, like Peter, love to play in the snow, and can find many uses on how to play in the snow. Some activities that you might do with children would be make snowmen out of a child's footprints. When they are finished they can decorate the snowmen with construction paper, yarn, ect. Another activity that you might do with the children would be dressing in winter clothing, such as snow boots, hats, and scarfs and pretend that it is snowing outside and go play in the pretend snow. Children can also have snow-cones as a snack. “The Snowy Day” written by Ezra Jack Keats is a great story to read to elementary students during the winter.
