(117) The Divine Ryans by Wayne Johnston. This is a lesser known book by Johnston, the author of The Colony of Unrequited Dreams and The Navigator of New York. I have read the latter and recommend it. The Divine Ryans is more modern (set in 1966 and into 1967) and deals with the young D ... Great idea Bonnie. Here are my faves so far:

Edited to get rid of unrequired dreams. Note to self: do not post on LT at 7 am without coffee in veins. #2 Don't know if I'd recommend it, but Colony of Unrequited Dreams was written by Newfoundlander Wayne Johnston - although I don't think he lives there anymore. He has written other stuff, too, but CUD was set on Newfoundland.

Colony of Unrequited Dreams I'm in late to this discussion but I love this topic. My all time favorite book title is The Colony of Unrequited Dreams by Wayne Johnston. So yearning and romantic. It's set in Newfoundland and I bought it solely on the title. Was pretty good too. ... is Pregnant and still on the library waiting list for Fruit and The Book of Negroes for Canada Reads, I've started the Colony of Unrequited Dreams and really enjoying the beautiful writing. ... #17 sjmcreary - I **LOVED** the Colony of Unrequited Dreams and have just mooched The Naviagators of New York by Johnston. Have seen mixed reviews on LT, but didn't look too hard in case there were ... ... trying to remember my history. I'm also reading A Secret and Unlawful Killing which is set in early 1500's Ireland, and The Colony of Unrequited Dreams which is a biographical novel about Joe Smallwood - the man largely responsible for Newfoundland becoming part of Canada in the 1940's. I have to echo torontoc's mention of Wayne Johnston, I absolutely adore The Colony of Unrequited Dreams. It's always my second book recommendation to unsuspecting victims, right after Midnight's Children. ... Open, Michael Crummey's River Thieves and almost anything that Wayne Johnston writes, although I prefer his The Colony of Unrequited Dreams and the memoir Baltimore's Mansion. My favourite writer from Saskatchewan is Guy Vanderhaeghe who wrote The Englishman's Boy and The ... Rocketjk, I'd like to recommend Wayne Johnston, an excellent Canadian writer from Newfoundland. The Colony of Unrequited Dreams and Baltimore's Mansion are both excellent books of his. ... Dogs.
For more serious sounding titles, I really like some of Wayne Johnston's: The Navigator of New York, The Colony of Unrequited Dreams and The Custodian of Paradise.

I enjoyed Colony of Unrequited Dreams and The Divine Ryans, but didn't like The Navigator of New York at all. (My Granny did, though).
My favourite Newfoundland author is Bernice Morgan hands down. Anyone who likes reading about Newfoundland really should read Random Passage. Yes, I read The Colony of Unrequited Dreams as well and really enjoyed it. There are so many good lines in it; the novel really lends itself to a lot of favorite quotes. I've not read any Lisa Moore, but my cousin has taken creative writing classes taught by her at Memorial University of Newfo ... ... stories of Lisa Moore- Open more than her novel Alligator. Baltimore's Mansion -the memoir by Johnston and his novel The Colony of Unrequited Dreams taught me alot about Newfoundland history. I also found both authors have an interesting style of writing and tell a good story.
Certainly the books of Wayne Johnston- the memoir Baltimore's Mansion, and the both The Colony of Unrequited Dreams and The Custodian of Paradise are important books to read about Newfoundland.
I also like Lisa Moore's books Open: Stories (short stories) and Alligator: a novel. #18
Wayne Johnston's book The Custodian of Paradise is really a sequel to The Colony of Unrequited Dreams. ( which I read some years ago) I would recommend that you start with that one. Also his memoir, Baltimore's Mansions is terrific. And all about Newfoundland. 22. The Colony of Unrequited Dreams by Wayne Johnston. A fictionalised account of the life of Jo Smallwood, the first premier of Newfoundland - I loved it.
23. Black Mischief by Evelyn Waugh. I read this for my book club. Some of the language is not pc but very interesting.
24. Death ... ... I can tell, Housekeeping is a book about negative space. An absolutely stunning read, though.

Sheilagh Fielding is among my favorite characters in fiction. I thought the ending of Custodian fell somewhat flat, but the rest of the book was ... Wayne Johnston...didn't he write the Colony of Unrequited Dreams? and I see by the touchstone that my question is answered. Is this one historical fiction? I have fondled Colony several times; perhaps attracted by the cover...never quite enough to bring it home though.
