What the heck? I can absolutely get behind werewolves infiltrating WI and lusty Native American professors helping out the local policewoman with her investigation -and such (wink, wink). Entertaining airplane reading. ( )

She's a detective looking into lost people and he's a Native American activist, with a very shy big dog, honest.

More and more of the locals are starting to behave strangely and they have to team up to investigate. They both have their own secrets and it looks like they are running out of time. They also have to decide what they are going to do with each other. And then the Jager Suchers turn up. ( )

Heroine is a HUGE sarcastic, smart-ass. I loved her. ( )

Other than the Anne Rice Vampire chronicles I have never really gotten into supernatural fiction, and I don't think I've ever read a romance novel. So I didn't have high expectations for this book, but I was very surprised at how much I liked the book.

Mrs. Handeland really has something with this book. I was instantly captivated by the action that takes place at the begining of the book. The main character, Jessie, was very relatable. I could see myself in her shoes and her thoughts and dialogue was something I could hear comming out of my mouth.

As the story progresses you begin to share the doubt that Jessie has and as new bits of the story come together I found myself trying to figure out who was the Wolf God.

Overall I think this was very well written and I will definatley be getting the next book in the series. The only reason that I didn't give it a 5-star rating is that I don't see this book as being something that I would re-read. But I did like it and found myself for a few nights reading until I couldn't keep my eyes open, simply because I didn't want to put this one down. ( )

Not your typical werewolf novel. A few twists on the traditional storyline, well drawn characters, and a nicely paced mystery all make for a few hours of fun reading. I'll definitely read more of
Handeland. ( )

Fast-paced and intriguing. I really liked Jessie, the main character - she's tough, funny and sarcastic and smart enough to admit when she doesn't know what she's doing. And of course, I adore the supernatural, and the focus on a secret government special forces focused on supernatural beings? Well, sign me up! ( )

This was an enjoyable combination of romance, paranormal, and mystery, which surprised me. It had me guessing up until almost the very end. ( )

From Publishers Weekly
Sassy, wisecracking policewoman Jessie McQuade, the book's first-person narrator, takes readers on a thrilling hunt through the forests of smalltown Miniwa, Wis., in search of a mythical predator in this lively paranormal romance. No-nonsense Jessie has never believed in magic or other supernatural "woo woo," but when she sees schoolteacher Karen Larson turn rabid in the classroom and attempt to bite one of her students shortly after being bitten by a wolf herself, she begins to realize that the world is not just black and white but "a host of annoying shades of gray." Before long, she's tramping through the forest with a self-professed werewolf hunter by her side and lusty thoughts of gorgeous professor Will Cadote, an expert in Native American mythology, racing through her mind. The enigmatic professor may be able to help Jessie figure out why the onyx wolf totem she found on the road near where Karen was bitten is so important, but it's possible he may be a werewolf himself. Handeland (The Husband Quest, etc.) sets a feverish pace, thrusting Jessie into one dangerous situation after another, and she keeps readers in delicious suspense over Will's motives. What makes this book so compulsively readable, however, is Jessie's spunky narration, acerbic wit and combustible chemistry with Will. ( )

Personally not a very good start to a series. I can only hope it gets better as it progresses (since I bought all the books at once I ,might as well read them). The writing didn't seem to flow, it was choppy and not completely original. I prefer books that I lose time while reading. That you can't put down because you just have to find out what happens next. This book took me a week to read. I was never held by it where I couldn't wait to find out what the next surprise was (there really werent' any). It was also somewhat obvious. Half way through I had basically figured out everything, including who the black wolf was and who the wolf god would be. ( )

It was a great read. Could not figure out who was a wolf until the end. Least likely person was a wolf. ( )
