FROM AMAZON: Award-winning author and journalist Bob Woodward turns his attention to the presidency of George W. Bush. Before the acts of terrorism on 11 September, George W. Bush's presidency had been beset by numerous problems. Not only was it in many peoples eyes invalid, very few people took him seriously as a world statesman. Then following one violent mindless act of terrorism, George W. Bush became a president that his country could rely on, one they felt they could trust to lead them through these difficult times. And the world saw a man who was decisive and resolute, a president who was seemingly determined to route out the people who had carried out the heinous acts. But one year after the attacks how has the 44th President of the United States fared? And what were the actual behind the scenes discussions that took place whilst the country was rocked by the crisis? Bob Woodward has been shadowing the President since those fateful events, he was allowed unprecedented access to closed-door meetings and briefings and this masterful book is a look at what really happened. Woodward did what he does best... ...Woodward documented the days/weeks/months following the September 11th attacks and how the White House handled the situation in a very even handed and exposed way. There was little room for question in this book as Woodward gave you every angle from the people who were there. "Objective journalism" is a non sequitor, at least in this decade of what passes for journalism. I think it's not only foolish but also dangerous to believe that any journalist writes about his or her subject in an unbiased way, yet I have read reviews of this book which praise this book for exactly that: "conscienciously fair" is one of my particular favorites. Bob Woodward is no fan of the right, no fan of Bush or his administration, and no fan of the Iraq war. No references for Woodward's "facts" or assertions are included in the book. You make the call. I would add that Woodward's newest book, Obama's Wars, has pages of chapter notes and references at the end. Why the difference in the two books? And will anyone even notice. no reviews | add a review
Distinctions
With his unmatched investigative skill, Bob Woodward tells the behind-the-scenes story of how President George W. Bush and his top national security advisers, after the initial shock of the September 11 attacks, led the nation to war. Extensive quotations from the secret deliberations of the National Security Council - -- and firsthand revelations of the private thoughts, concerns and fears of the president and his war cabinet - -- make Bush at War an unprecedented chronicle of a modern presidency in time of grave crisis. Based on interviews with more than a hundred sources and four hours of exclusive interviews with the president, Bush at War reveals Bush's sweeping, almost grandiose, vision for remaking the world. "I'm not a textbook player, I'm a gut player," the president said. Woodward's virtual wiretap into the White House Situation Room reveals a stunning group portrait of an untested president and his advisers, three of whom might t No library descriptions found. |
