The Death of Vishnu by Manil Suri It has been a while since I've read it, but I loved The Rachel Papers. I don't remember if he was really angry so much as angsty (it's a word, right?). My best reads for 2008:
FICTION:
The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time by Mark Haddon.
The Rachel Papers by Martin Amis.
Death of a river guide by Richard Flanagan.
Like Water for Chocolate by Laura Esquival.
The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood.
Of mice and men ... ... can often be arbitrarily out of alphabetical order.
I.e. in my library I have two titles by Martin Amis; Money and The Rachel Papers. Clearly the title beginning with M should precede that beginning with R (or even T depending on how you see it).
The same thing happens with the two ... The Rachel Papers by Martin Amis is about a guy looking for romance. If I remember correctly, he doesn't fair well, though. It is a very funny book in any case. ... Is What It Is a biography of V.S. Naipaul by Patrick French about 100 pages in, quite good.
I'm also finishing off The Rachel Papers by Martin Amis which has been quite a bit of fun.
My first Amis fiction, don't know why I put it off for so long. I really enjoyed Experience. The Quiet American by Graham Greene
The Rachel Papers by Martin Amis
The Sanctuary Sparrow by Ellis Peters
The Talented Mr Ripley by Patricia Highsmith
The Unpleasantness at the Bellona Club by Dorothy L Sayers ... up with Magda by Isla Dewar
National Velvet by Enid Bagnold
The Vacillations of Poppy Carew by Mary Wesley
The Rachel Papers by Martin Amis ... I also love David Sedaris, especially Me Talk Pretty One Day. I also remember having a really good time with The Rachel Papers, though it has been a really long time and I don't remember why. (Perhaps I need to reread it.) I'd be wary of going near Martin Amis's The Rachel Papers again. It was genius when I read it at the age of 17, I doubt I'd feel the same way 20 years later. ... damn I picked up another book, grrr I have bought to many books this month (like 10 I think and counting) so have started The Rachel Papers by Martin Amis I was half hoping that it was on the 1001 Books to Read list but sadly its not.. But have read the first 2 chapters on my way home this ... I'm not a re-reader (who has the time), but if I was I wouldn't pick up On The Road or Martin Amis' The Rachel Papers again. I read the latter when I was 17, it was a total time and place thing. ... years ago on the recommendation of someone I respected who thought it was great. I thought it was only so-so. I then read The Rachel Papers, which I absolutely loved. I recently read House of Meetings. It had really great moments and then some that dragged. I suppose that, like anyone, he ... ...
