cmbohn, I know Martin Fierro is available in a bilingual edition, so that'd be sort of win-win. If you're interested in Argentine literature, I'd reccomend Martin Fierro. It's a two-part epic poem about a gaucho and his troubles after getting on the wrong side of the law. I know it's widely available in translation. Also of note is Facundo, which is about one of the military leaders ... ... good at reading poetry. I do enjoy it at times, such as with some of Poe's works, or if it tells a story, such as in Martin Fierro. I get the impression Martin Fierro is important in Argentine literature roughly the same way Quixote is in the literature of Spain. I finished El gaucho Martin Fierro, which is actually in two parts, both of which are epic poems. In the first part, Martin Fierro gets pressed into military service on the frontier, where he's underfed, underpaid, and generally maltreated. I'm cross-posting with Reading Globally's March category, so I'm going to be concentrating on my first category (works about Argentina) ... I started El gaucho Martin Fierro yesterday. It was originally published in two parts, the first in 1872, the second in 1879, and was an immediate success. It is now considered a central work of Argentine literature.

I also just started El gaucho Martin Fierro, which I checked out of the library. It's a bilingual edition, so I have some fallback for when the Spanish escapes me.

One Hundred Years of Solitude is my favorite! I read it in English. I don't know if my Spanish could live up to that one. I've also read Chronicle of a Death Fo ... ... up the idea of gauchesco literature from I don't know where, but it refers to works (mostly Argentine) about gauchos. Martin Fierro is sort of the classic example.
The term Orientales is pretty archaic, and it may stretch back to the 19th century before Uruguay was a separate nation and ... ... , align=center, height=222, width=171>
