I try to re-read it each year. Have you seen the PBS adaptation of the movie? It is wonderful. I starting with what I liked best, but with the first three very close together:
Mrs Dalloway by Virginia Woolf
A prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving
Emma by Jane Austen
Mannen som Elsket Yngve by Tore Renberg (translation: The man who loved Yngve)
I, robot by Isaac Asimov ... I was wondering if Straub strikes you as being at all like John Irving. Anything by Jodi Picoult also sends me over the edge.
I've had many friends recommend A Prayer for Owen Meany and tried it a couple of times. Couldn't get passed 40 pages. I've tried a handful of Irving and the only one I could make it through was A Widow ... ... but end up so irritated by the plot and characters that I'm annoyed I read it at all. I managed to stop after my third try (A Prayer for Owen Meany, I think) but I keep having to fight off the urge to try again. I think Irving is good at coming up with a concept but gets lost in the execution ... ... better because much of the junk is stripped away.
John Irving is a case in point. Look at the film adaptations of A Prayer for Owen Meany and A Widow for One Year, or to be more to point, don't look at them. (Although I did like the film of The World According to Garp the book is ... ... some great books there.

Paperbacks are .50 cents, and hardcovers are $1.00. I usually swing by once a month to see what's new. ... I have ever read, however, the funniest literary scene I have ever come across is the Nativity scene in the book titled "A Prayer For Owen Meany" by John Irving
Another author who comes to mind is Richard Russo. The man has a great sense of humor :>)
