The Butter Battle is between the Zooks and the Yooks because one country butters their bread on the top and the other on the bottom. It is all about the grandfathers dedication to getting rid of the Zooks.

media: pen and paint
genre: fictional fantasy of Yooks and Zooks (made up creatures) who relate to average earthly dilemmas.
plot: has a beginning a middle and allows you to try and determine an ending; this works well.

This is a great rhyming book for children to read. This book talks about having enemies or people that you don't want to be your neighbors.

Another brilliant book by Dr. Seuss. My favorite thing about it is that it is one of those books that can be read on so many levels. To younger children, it is a fun, rhyming book with the Yooks and the Zooks arguing over how to eat bread and butter. However, there are many lessons to be looked at and learned from this story that the older the children get, hopefully the more they will recognize and appreciate. The book deals with prejudice and intolerance and shows how quickly violence can get out of hand. I feel this is a picture book that even high school kids should take the opportunity to read. ( )

So much more than a picture book. On the surface, this book presents an interesting story for young readers in the typical Dr. Seuss fashion, with crazy names and lots of bright illustrations. On a deeper level however, is a book that brillantly sums up the dangers of an arms race between two nations. This book is not the first time that Dr. Seuss has tackled an issue not normally found in a picture book. The Lorax serves the same cautionary purpose for the message of protecting the environment. This book works great in high school U.S. history classrooms during a unit on the Cold War. What better way to start a lesson on the arms race than with the teacher reading this book to the class! The Butter Battle Book

Book description

Amazon.com (ISBN 0394865804, Hardcover)

A cautionary Cold War tale (first told by Dr. Seuss back in 1984), The Butter Battle Book still has a lot to teach about intolerance and how tit-for-tat violence can quickly get out of hand. Explaining the very serious differences between the Zooks and the Yooks, a Zook grandpa tells his grandchild the unspeakable truth: "It's high time that you knew of the terribly horrible thing that Zooks do. In every Zook house and every Zook town every Zook eats his bread with the butter side down!" He then recalls his days with the Zook-Watching Border Patrol, as he gave any Zook who dared come close "a twitch with my tough-tufted prickley Snick-Berry Switch." But when the Zooks fought back, the switches gave way to Triple-Sling Jiggers, then Jigger-Rock Snatchems--even a Kick-a-Poo Kid that was "loaded with powerful Poo-a-Doo Powder and ants' eggs and bees' legs and dried-fried clam chowder."

With lots of fun and more-than-fair digs at the runaway spending and one-upmanship of U.S.-Soviet days, The Butter Battle Book makes a chuckle-filled read whether you're old enough to get the historical references or not. (And with all the Bitsy Big-Boy Boomeroos still in service, this book's message is far from obsolete.) (Ages 4 to 8) --Paul Hughes
