Oh dear. As one who finds poetry almost just a decoration, perhaps not the best book to choose. Boringly gushing about poems - even though my admiration for Robert Graves and Sassoon runs high - the significance the author allocates to their meaning and impact on both literature and history proved rather too heavy for this reader.

2548 The Auden Generation: Literature and Politics in England in the 1930s, by Samuel Hynes (read 4 Nov 1993) This book was published in 1977. I found much of it of little interest, though one is surely dismayed that it was so fashionable to support Stalinist tyranny in the 1930's. The book deals with young English writers, concentrating on W. H. Auden, Cecil Day-Lewis, Louis MacNiece, George Orwell, Michael Roberts, and Stephen Spender. A lot of attention is paid to poetry, much of which I found of little interest. ( )
