I was dropping off insurance claims, and right next to where my car was parked there's a bookstore, which had a table of heavily discounted books outside. I also went to the Salvation Army. I've been going through a longish real literature ... I picked up Three Act Tragedy by Agatha Christie, The Tommyknockers, and Nick Hornby's A Long Way Down today during a delightful trip to B&N. I JUST finished reading A Long Way Down, which I loved. I didn't expect to, either, so it was a pleasant surprise.
Now I need to read Seize The Night for work, because I disliked The Taking, and when/if I end up having a meeting with Dean Koontz, I'd like to say something positive about ... To celebrate the Fourth, this apathetic American is going to read all day:
I'll finish A Long Way Down, which I'm loving, then read
Seize The Night,
and read the last few volumes of Transmetropolitan.
If I still have any hours left in the day (which I might, because I read freakishly ... ... made me despise Oprah. Go figure.
Anyway, I finished The Taking last night, and decided to treat myself and read A Long Way Down before reading Seize The Night. I started it, but so far I'm not adoring it. We'll see.

I liked A Long Way Down, and I'd put it near the top of the list of my favorite Hornby books, but it's not always light going. I hope you end up enjoying it. After just finishing In Cold Blood, I decided to take a break with the more serious literature with A Long Way Down. Not bad for ... Finished Long Way Down which I didn't find exceptional and in fact was quite annoyed by some of the characters.
Now onto The Ragbone man ... view. Then you got the mothers' stories, and the daughters seemed like shallow little gits.
Nick Hornby's Maureen in A Long Way Down is a great mom at the end of her tether. Can't say more without spoiling, but I loved her. I'm reading A Long Way Down by Nick Hornby and really enjoying it. Next on my list is The Yellow House by Martin Gayford about Van Gogh and Gauguin when they shared a house...anyone read this? I just got a huge shipment from Amazon of books for my kids (mostly Newberry ... Terribly sorry, this is WWI, but such a good book I can't help myself - A long, Long Way by Sebastian Barry. No matter what I read about war I always wonder what the experience was really like. This novel seems to comes closest to describing the experience of a soldier.
