I remember this as one of the first books that made a big impact on me, and its a book which I've managed to keep until now (I gave away most of my childhood / teenage books). For a long time, I couldn't find any of Francesca Lia Block's works, so I clung to this one until I was able to lay my hands on her other novels.
Girl Goddess #9 opened my eyes to a lot of issues in life when I first read it. Living as a teenager in a Southeast-Asian country, I was not exposed sex, homosexuality or racism very much. I remember feeling very confused as I read story after story, unsure of why a boy would want to be a girl, or how a boy could love another boy.
I've lost track of how many times I've gone back to read this book, and each time I re-read it, it seems to be from a different light, and it leaves me feeling a little changed.
The last time I read Girl Goddes #9 (July 2008), I wanted to cry after every story, I wanted to hold every character in the book in my arms and tell them that everything will be okay.
Francesca Lia Block blew me away with her lyrical prose and dreamy descriptions; I will continue to cling on to her words.

A collection of Block's short stories, this is a quick but enjoyable read, a lighter serving of her longer fiction. ( )

A beautiful story collection. It's a quick read that could serve as a good introduction to anyone interested in trying Ms. Block's work. ( )

Nine stories -- some much better than others -- about growing up in different ways (Tweetie Sweet Pea's innocence or Winnie and Cubby's confessions). This is a short, but lovely read. Block's writing style shines. ( )

Again, just very interesting stories about being a girl and what it means and ... yeah. Just read some of her stuff. ( )

Book description

Amazon.com Amazon.com Review (ISBN 006447187X, Paperback)

Movie stars, rock stars, pond nymphs, intergalactic superheroes . . . who are the real goddesses in Francesca Lia Block's world? Real young women--the kind who ache, bleed, dance, and talk to blue ghosts in closets. Famous for her lyric Weetzie Bat books, Block blossoms in this collection of short stories about love: straight, gay, familial, and otherworldly. Very few young adult authors talk as frankly as Block about sex and some of the other yearnings we feel in this world, yet she guides her readers toward the self-respect and courage necessary to make smart choices about those yearnings.
