This book is really fun to reread because there are so many little throwaway lines that end up being foreshadows. Knowing what was coming next never made me bored, either - just excited to get to the next big moment.

I really appreciate the visceral description of Gen's hunger and exhaustion coming out of prison, and I really came to love all of the main characters (except Ambiades, whom I suppose I can manage to pity on a good day). Although not a lot happens plot-wise in the first half of the story, the dialogue and description keep me invested. ( )

As soon as I finished this book, I wanted to read it again. That's how good it is. Good! ( )

I will be honest i was really looking foward to reading this. It really did not capture my attention as i would have liked. I thought all the characters were cool but the whole story was confusing and the end was such a info dump that it made the story disjointed. I wonder if the next book will be better. I really did like all of the characters though it just did not capture me like i hoped it would. I really want to see more magic and gods in it. Maybe when i get into the next book it will change my thoughts. ( )

Book description
"There is something I want you to steal. Do this for me, and I'll see that you don't go back to prison. Fail to do this for me, and I will still make sure that you don't go back to prison."

The king's magus needs a skilful thief. Incarcerated for stealing from the king himself, Gen is the just the pawn the magus is looking for. Cocky, brash and extremely uncooperative, Gen is press-ganged into an unlikely band of travellers and marched through Sounis, into hostile Attolia.

Concealed in Attolia is an object of such power it can make or break a king - but even stolen treasure has it's price.
