The Mitten is about a boy named Nicki that loses one of his new mittens. Forest animals find the mitten and try it out. Eventually Nicki is reunited with his mitten, unaware that the animals took it for a spin. The star of this book is Jan Brett's illustrations. They bring the story to life though careful details and her unique illustrated page borders. Her books are a feast for the eyes and will engross students whether read aloud or as a student free reading, grades K-3. ( )

A Ukrainian boy loses his mitten on the snow. A mole, a rabbit, a porcupine, an owl, a badger, a fox, and even a bear are one by one making their home in his mitten. Finally, a small mouse manages to come in but his whiskers tickles the bear's nose. The bear sneezes, and all of the animals pop out of the mitten causing it to sail in the air just as the boy is about to give up.
