Darina is the daughter in law of the great Myrtle Allen, founder of the Ballymaloe phenomenon. Myrtle started a restaurant (www.ballymaloe.ie) in her beautiful working farmhouse in 1964. Myrtle's son, Tim, took over the farm from his father, Ivan, and married Darina, who started the cookery school in 1983 (www.cookingisfun.ie). Tim and Darina's daughter-in-law, Rachel, is now also a very successful member of the cookery school and a TV chef and author. This is one of Mrs Allen's earlier books and full of things you'll want to try. I made the easily executed but impressive to see Chocolate Christmas Tree when the children were small and Mrs Hanrahan's Pudding Sauce has been an annual fixture in our house for nearly 20 years. A guest even insisted on having a little portion of it bottled up to take away.
