How fast is it possible to read a book? When the author thinks in clichés, when he isn't developing new thoughts, when he's just skating on the ice of his own glibness, then it's possible to read very very fast.

At first savoring each line and image, or trying to... until I see that every line is a trivial bit of writerly wit... then reading faster, looking for insights, turns of phrase, plot developments... and then faster, taking in whole pages at a time, hoping only for surprises, infelicities, traction of any kind on the smooth thoughtless surface.
