I was really looking forward to this book. I thought it's going to be a great new shifter series. And it was up until one point. I liked the world that the author was building. She made me like several characters.

Spoiler alert. I have a HUGE problem with the whole Nina vs Carter fight. Why in the world would you think it's even ok for a werewolf to fight a human in a challenge?! To quote the book: "Are you kidding me? This asshole insults me, insults my brother and wants me to apologize or he'll use his genetically superior strength and speed to kill me?" Said by Nina. "You two asked me to come here. You people, you changed my brother without his permission and then you killed him! This piece of shit insults my dead brother and all humans and I'm the one who has to apologize? What the fuck is wrong with this picture?" Carter attacks without warning. Then somehow Nina survives the fight. Really? More from Nina: "Oh goody. Now that he's attacked me and made me into one of you while not a single fucking one of you did a thing to stop a werewolf from attaching a human - I'm victorious. Lucky me." She could have apologized to stop the fight but why should she. She's grieving. Plus she doesn't know werewolf rules. She's human so why would she know. As the story progress's, Nina's logical mind understood the rules somewhat. Well I don't. And of course Nina eventually (few hours after waking up) forgives Lex and eventually forgives Cade. How can she even stay? They were suppose to keep her safe. Not almost die and get turned werewolf without her consent.

Right now I don't plan on reading more in this series. My rose colored glasses are broken. ( )

At an early age Nina Reyes and her little brother became orphans and rather than be separated by the state they ran. Nina learned how to take care of herself and her brother by any means necessary and then he was bitten by a werewolf. When her brother shows up needing help and the Enforcer of his pack is looking for him what is Nina going to do?

Lex Warden and his brother Cade are trying to figure out why money has gone missing from the pack coffers and then one of their members is killed and the only person that may know anything is Gabriel Reyes but he has disappeared. The only lead Lex has is the Gabriel's older sister and she is a crazy spinster looking woman who points a shot gun at him.

This was pretty good. Many times in PNR I'm left feeling dissatisfied over the reaction of the non-paranormals. Dane really took the time to explore that aspect of it. On the one hand it worked. It was good to see that a woman who has nothing but bad feelings toward weres didn't just fall at their feet. On the other hand, I think she may have taken the reality of it a little too far.

Despite that, I enjoyed the story. The pack dynamics were interesting and so was the romance. I generally shy away from the "fated mates" trope, except in shifter books. Then I can accept it.

I did get frustrated with Lex for not being upfront with Nina right from the beginning. He meant to change her entire life, but didn't discuss it with her first? Big no-no. I think Nina let him off the hook a little to easily.

Overall I found this to be a fast, interesting read. I'm anxious to continue with the series. ( )
