"Happy Birthday, America" presents American culture in a fun, poetic way that will engage the minds of younger readers. The poetic text reads very quickly, and presents the important parts of our culture, such as The Knights of Columbus and concerts under the stars. The illustrations support the text by providing vivid visual representations that allow the reader to understand the key points of the story. The book challenges younger readers to view the American culture as its own distinct culture. The main idea of this book is to present American culture in an easy to understand way. ( )

Mary Pope Osborne celebrates July 4th, the most American of holidays, with a warm family story. Three generations enjoy parades, popcorn, "Yankee Doodle," and at the end of the day, lightning bugs and fireworks. "Then I blow out the stars, as if they were candles on a giant birthday cake" --a glorous image in Peter Catalanotto's glowing and buoyant watercolors.
