I decided to read this book on a whim and I'm so glad I did! As one reviewer stated, the subject matter of crime against a child is a tough read, but I can only imagine what it was like to be the young friend of a murdered child. The author does a brilliant job of providing insight into her life growing up in the '50's and shows us life wasn't quite as rosy as some would believe. ( )

Good read, but the subject (murder of a very young girl) was tough to read. I don't think I'd recommend it to anyone. Just my opinion. ( )

I really enjoyed the way the author interwove the stories of her family and of her friends murder.
I got a very good sense of Mary Ann Tirone Smith's "little corner of the world". She has a great spirit and I identified with her love of her friends and family.
I hope she still enjoys Bagna Cauda - often! ( )

A memoir by a novelist. Very well done in the beginning - interweaving her story with that of the murderer of her firend, in a way that we don't know who this guy is. In the middle she became obsessed with every detail of the trial and execution, and the book lost its charm. But she's a really good writer. ( )

Amazon.com Product Description (ISBN 0743279786, Paperback)

With beauty, power, and remarkable wit, Mary-Ann Tirone Smith interweaves a bittersweet portrait of growing up among the working stiffs of 1950s Hartford, Connecticut, with the chilling progress of a serial pedophile who threatens to shatter her small town's innocence. In Girls of Tender Age, Smith lovingly evokes the jubilance and chaos of life in her extended French-Italian family and the challenges of living with her brother Tyler, an autistic at a time before anyone knew what that meant. Hanging over Smith's rough-and-tumble youth is the shadow of the approaching killer who forever alters the landscape of her childhood.
