This book was first published in the mid-1950s and shows it in its dated approach to the language of nation, race, and ethnicity. However, it still has much to offer in its collection of articles exploring the contributions of Persia (Iran) to world culture, especially the culture of the West. From its influence on the religious development of Judaism and Christianity to its role in medical pharmacology, Persia has indeed contributed a lot, and the English language is filled with words that memorialize those contributions. The articles in this book cover influence on Greece and Rome, Byzantium, Arabs, and India, religion, language, literature, carpets, and science, and include an article on gardens by Vita Sackville-West. The book ends with articles on Persia as seen by the West--the fabulous Royaume of Perse. It is a glamorous image long pre-dating the grimly demonized nation familiar since the revolution. While "The Legacy of Persia" may be a prime example of Edward Said's concept of "Orientalism," it's nice to see the richness of Iranian culture celebrated and good to re-acquaint myself with a book that inflamed my own imagination when I was in my mid-teens.
