I like Wilson's novels a lot, but I really did not enjoy these stories much. I appreciate his ability to build characters with moments of oblique dialogue, but none of the stories really added up to anything. I did enjoy the one about the staff/guest dance at a mid-level hotel in the interwar period. (But given the reference to "Vile Bodies," it might just be a tolerable impersonation of Evelyn Waugh.) The collection reads like a young author trying out a bag of tricks without quite knowing what will work. Within the next few years, Wilson greatly matured as a writer with both Anglo-Saxon Attitudes and Hemlock and After. ( )

I think this was the first thing that Angus Wilson published, and I haven't read any of his other stuff, but these stories definitely seemed like something written by a young man with promise but without the narrative and stylistic polish of a better writer. Some of the stories were tiresome to get through and some were pretty good, but I don't remember any of them despite having read the book only a few months ago. The quirky author's biography on the back of the original Penguin paperback edition is better than the actual book, and is pretty much the only reason I'm keeping my copy. Maybe his later stuff is better. ( )
