I read your review of The Gnostic Mystery, and wish I could write so well. I'm still trying to become a better reviewer. I also chose The Secret Magdalene as one of my favorite books of the year when I read it last year. I totally agree with your evaluation of The Gnostic Mystery (my review is on my challenge thread and in my library), and also with your recommendation of The Secret Magdalene, one of my favorite books this year. I finished The Gnostic Mystery by Randy Davila yesterday. It will go in my Mystery/Thriller category, though there wasn't much mystery, and no thrills. I received this as an Early Reviewer book, and that's the only reason I finished it -- so I could write the review and get it out of the way with. Terrible book - only 1 star. This is the first ER book I've received that didn' ... 138: Oh no! I'm supposed to be getting The Gnostic Mystery in the mail for Early Review! I'm sorry to hear you found it a stinker, though I'll still read it with an open mind and judge for myself.
I'm two chapters away from finishing First Comes Love, Then Comes Malaria and am loving every ... the Gnostic Mystery was a major stinker. Scholarship was horrid, prose was worse. I'm amazed anyone could give this book a positive review. I couldn't help laughing reading the review by the guy that grew up outside of organized religion who called the book "enlightening." I'm probably going to stop reading the Gnostic Mystery in favor of starting something I actually want to read. I'm interested in the history behind it and Gnosticism, but most of the characters, the plot, and dialogue are really grating on me. Most likely I'll be starting on the Graveyard Book ... No inserts - just the book ... of a number of friends, and enjoying it immensely, even if I'm not understanding some of the references. I just got the Gnostic Mystery in the mail today, as well as the Graveyard Book, and Anathem, so I'll probably set Terrier aside for a while to at least read tGB and the Gnostic ... Just got the Gnostic Mystery in the mail for the ER program. Also got the Graveyard Book and Anathem through bookswim. Almost positive I'm keeping Graveyard, might keep Anathem. ... but I presume I got this book because of the number of skating books in my LT catalog.
I am also supposed to get the Gnostic mystery. I'm not holding my breath: it has taken up to ten weeks to get an ER book. This will be my first Early Review copy! I'm getting The Gnostic Mystery by Randy Davila ... of Jude"
