Fun. At least, it ended with a laugh. It's a very rich story, with funny bits and real sorrow, anxiety and relief, and a great bunch of characters. I got more than three-quarters through it, though, before I realized _which_ Henry this was - which was stupid, Henry II had no brother and at one point they specifically said that they were wary of Richard as a boy because he looked just like his father John. But Henry married to Eleanor had me thoroughly confused. It's also an era I know little about - Henry II, Richard Lionheart and John I know, but not much after that. So, the story itself - is a romance, in fact two romances, set in medieval times and (unsurprisingly for Gellis, but rare elsewhere) depicting them accurately rather than as modern times and sensibilities in fancy dress. The contrast between what Raymond is used to and how Sir William and Alys live is fascinating. Henry and Richard are neatly portrayed, with their various virtues and faults. The villain, even, though basically without any virtues, is presented as a person with reasons for his acts, not a cardboard villain thinking only of evil. His thoughts about his son tell quite a lot about him. Good story. Not wonderful, but I expect I'll reread it a time or two. ( )
