I denne filmen møter vi den unge Jane Austen, mens hun er en svermerisk ungpike som drømmer om den store kjærligheten. Foreldrene er ikke akkurat hva man ville betegne som velstående, og det ligger i kortene at døtrene må finne seg rike ektemenn for å klare seg best mulig i livet.

Jane er ikke som ungpiker flest. Hun er intelligent og hun drømmer om å bli forfatter. Og er det noe unge piker på den tiden helst ikke skulle være, så var det nettopp intelligent og med selvstendige tanker.

Da den velstående Lady Gresham tilbyr Jane ekteskap med sin tørre og humørløse nevø, settes Jane under et umåtelig sterkt press fra sine foreldre. De har ganske enkelt ikke råd til å fø på henne i det uendelige. Jane er rådvill - helt til hun møter den stilige og elegante Tom. Tom vil også ha henne, men hans onkel, som Tom er helt avhengig av, har lite sans for denne lutfattige kvinnen som er litt for ramsalt i replikkene sine ...

I filmen får vi innblikk i hvorfor Jane aldri giftet seg og hva som utgjorde hennes viktigste inspirasjonskilde når hun skrev slik hun gjorde.

Filmen er både nydelig og vakker. Når den ikke når helt til topps, er det fordi jeg mener det blir litt feil at filmen er amerikanskprodusert og ikke engelsk. Noe av det typisk engelske, som burde ha vært en del av filmen, mangler rett og slett. ( )

The young Jane Austen wishes to be a writer. Her mother thinks otherwise. Although she is offered many marriage proposals she accepts none until the mischevious Thomas Lefroy shows up and turns her world around. At first she finds him ignorant and self centered but as she gets to know him, they start to flirt and eventually fall in love. Thomas' relatives disagree with the match and threaten to disinherit him if he marries her. Jane's mother also disagrees with the match. As a result of this, Thomas tries to convince Jane to runaway with him. Instead, Jane stays with her family and ends her affair with Lefroy. She begins to write some of her greatest works of all time. Lefroy becomes the inspiration for Mr. Darcy in the novel, Pride and Prejudice.… (more)
