Amazing that you can do all the UK counties and districts. I'm hopeless on the UK.
I have both Larry's Party and the Diviners but haven't read any Canadian books since I signed up for the challenge! oops. I'm on a Switzerland kick instead (we're moving to Basel ... ... to include my Manitoba book, which is Under the Ribs of Death by John Marlyn. Not really recommended. Instead I suggest Larry's Party by Carol Shields, or maybe the book I'm reading now, The Diviners by Margaret Laurence. Finished up Larry's Party by Carol Shields on the 1st-- love that book, I think I've read it four times now. I've finished The Year of the Flood since; I really liked it. I think it works best if you've read Oryx and Crake, and I hope the trilogy rumors are true. I'm now one chapter ... ... to read, but here's what I've cleaned out of the old TBR stack so far this year:
the Oldest Books in My Closet
1. Larry's Party, Carol Shields (Jan 9)
2. Travelers' Tales Tuscany, James O'Reilly ed. (Apr 29)
3. The Shipping News, E. Annie Proulx (May 28)
4. The Enchanted April, ... I read Larry's Party this year, but I didn't count it in this challenge. Somehow it just didn't say "Manitoba" to me. (That of course shouldn't stop anyone from using it if they want!). And count me in as a Complicated Kindness lover. Carol Shields sets many of her books in Winnipeg. My favorite is Larry's Party, which is also set in Toronto and other places, but Winnipeg is central.
A Complicated Kindness by Miriam Toews is highly regarded (even if I didn't like it) and is about a Mennonite girl in a small town ... ... that jeanette winterson should be a vmc that i can keep next to my Angela Carters and Atwoods. I also agree with the Carol Shields. I also just picked up the above book today in a charity shop, glad its got a good recomendation. ... - Orange prizelisted books to tie in with Orange January for Girlybooks Group.

Girl in a Blue Dress, which I got last week. What serendipity.
Larry's Party (I have tried this one before and it didn't grab me, but I'll try again.)
The Poisonwood Bible and that's probably enough, as it seems a long, dense book.

Next on my list is the 2009 Orange winner, Home. ... A Crime in the Neighborhood. Quite good. It starts out as a mystery, but there are deeper layers of meaning. Now on to Larry's Party. I finished no. 24 - Holes, and thoroughly enjoyed it!! ... is so good. Imagine being that startled peddlar! I have found all of Carol Shields's books wonderful, especially Larry's Party, although it was absolutely nothing like The Stone Diaries. ... an Oprah read, which astonishes me, except that she did once choose The Corrections didn't she? The Museum Guard and Larry's Party are also favorites. I will confess that I did not love A Complicated Kindness -- it felt too much like a educated Torontonian imagining what it would be ... Unless was interesting, but Larry's Party remains my favorite Carol Shields.
I have to second mrspenny's endorsement of The Tin Flute. I reread it periodically because it is sooo good. ... - review

279. Captain ... I liked your review of Larry's Party but have to say that I really loved that book. More than anything, she is such a good writer and there are images that remain in my mind (like the cut-in-half maze) although it's been years since I read the book.

Normally I wouldn't have read this, but my guy brought it back ... What did you think of Larry's party? I have had that sitting on my shelf for a long time. I loved Larry's Party, and I am surprised to hear that many people hated it! I think Carol Shields is an absolute genius. I am not reading it now for Orange January, because it wasn't that long ago that I read it, but I did read another Shields--Unless. Glad to hear that you liked this one. I'm not convinced this is a combining issue. Every book I've added today has 0 members. I just added Larry's Party, and once again, zero members. No options on different editions or anything. Only one choice of cover. However, if I search Larry's Party, there is a another version with 800+ ... For my Orange January book, I read Larry's Party. Unfortunately, due to my assigned school reading, I won't have time to read any other Orange books this month. Are we doing this again in July?
3. Larry's Party, Carol Shields
