No current Talk conversations about this book. cosy-mystery, British, law-enforcement, England, mystery, class-consciousness***** Everyone ASSumed that the fire was caused by the storm and the victim was caught in it. Everyone except the bored visitor, Lady Fieldhurst. She was sure that she had heard a gunshot, so she called for the Runner who investigated her (unlamented) husband's death and saved her from the noose, John Pickett. Attired in livery borrowed from the Lady's household and given a brief tutorial by her footman, John arrived to investigate and get caught up in the whole drama. It is a very British mystery with sly humor. Joel Froomkin is so very talented with the way that he is able to differentiate the characters and he did a great job with the accents. I won the audio in a giveaway. Yay me! Recently widowed Lady Fieldhurst is staying with friends in Yorkshire when there's what she believes is a suspicious death. She writes to her friend John Pickett and he arranges to act as her footman while investigating the death. The lovestruck Pickett realizes that he is not of her class and it is hopeless but can't help his feelings. At this point Lady Fieldhurst doesn't fully realize her feelings for Pickett. Not as good as the 1st book but I am interested in seeing how far this relatonship moves forward. no reviews | add a review
