Although published in 1972, the book is a copy of a 1913 edition. The text is about leadership and learning outdated skills such as signaling with flags. Many specific topics such as first aid rescue and cooking are still practical. The book contains introductions to such things as the night sky constelations, botony, fish, animals and so on. Woodpeckers habits are sandwiched in between tidiness and dampness so you never know where the author is going next. In essence, the book reflects the thinking of the outdoors, young women in the outdoors, and leadership in 1913. ( )

This is a reproduction of the first Girl Scout handbook. It's fascinating to get to see where Girl Scouts began- they seem to have had a combination of outdoors skills, good deeds, and preparation for housewifery. It's also fun to see what is outdated and amusing. ( )
