My inner 13 year old gives Ruby Red five stars.

Since I'm actually twice that age (my inner 13 year old says "wow, really?"), I'm going to ding it slightly for an unnecessarily obtuse main character, predictability (I'm... pretty sure I know what all the major plot twists are going to be), and not always grasping the intricacies of time travel. Why bother threatening to fire a secretary when you can threaten to go back in time and never hire her in the first place? If you're a shady secret society of wealthy aristos, how have you not systematically used time travel to make yourselves filthy rich on the stock market? And how is it possible for the "baddies" to know when you're going to meet with someone in the past, even though you've chosen the date at random? Easy, she told them after the meeting had taken place, and they hopped back for a visit. But only slightly, because my inner 13 year old wants the next book. ( )

So far so good.. engaging, entertaining, and well paced/written.

I've finished! This was a delightful read. Interesting premise, well set up conflicts, characters are well drawn, well paced writing that pulls you through the narrative. It does end somewhat abruptly but gives a nice teaser lead in to novel #2. This seems to be standard for this type of young adult novel in recent years. [the ending abruptly rather than winding up the story so it could - if needed -- stand alone. I suspect the publishing house demands this with an eye to the sales market as it seems to be quite prevalent across the genre] There was also only one major grammar error -- the editors are getting better! "Where are my hat and coat" should have been "Where is my hat and coat" singular subject requesting - not plural or a group. There was the usual "maths" error but the Brits seem intent upon using this egregious error constantly anyway. Don't ask.. I will rant. (someone pat them on the back please)

If is doesn't sink into the usual teen-angst romance serial in the second novel of the series (or the rest) I suspect this will be a really nice series for young adults.

I understand that this was originally published in German. If the author is German I give extra kudos because they have a great grasp of le settings and layout. It is also well translated.

Note that my library gave this away last year for some reason so I own this book.

6/10, after reading an ok war book I was hoping that I would enjoy this appealing sci-fi book since I've read and enjoyed plenty of books like this, sadly I didn't because I found some issues and it was just not enjoyable in the first place, where do I begin... It starts off with the main character Gwyneth who is a British girl living her life and everything looks normal except for the fact that everyone still uses DVDs and iPods, yeah I can see why this was given away since it's just too dated now. Only a few pages later something shocking happens when Gwyneth found herself in the same mansion but a different time period and that was confusing at first but soon enough more characters arrive to clear things up. The author just didn't find a way to make the characters and plot enjoyable which was the reason why it was a snorefest. It turned out that Gwyneth is part of some secret time travelling society and there are only 12 families in this since it revolves around 12 gems but still I didn't feel really intrigued. I tried to push myself through the rest of this where Gwyneth continued to time travel to different time periods to meet more characters and the ending wasn't great, there are two more books in the series but I doubt that my library would get them and it was just better if they gave this one away which they did. Well, I definitely know why this book is an International Bestseller!! The only thing about Ruby Red that I'm sorry about is that I didn't read it sooner. I practically tore through this book and couldn't believe it when I came to the last page. What a way to begin a trilogy! I am really looking forward to the rest of the series. We have gotten so many glimpses into a very complicated, tangled story and it is clear that our main characters, Gideon and Gwyneth, have just about as much as learn to we do. Very much looking forward to Sapphire Blue and Emerald Green!! ( )

Book description
Gwyneth Shepherd's sophisticated, beautiful cousin Charlotte has been prepared her entire life for traveling through time. But unexpectedly, it is Gwyneth, who in the middle of class takes a sudden spin to a different era! Gwyneth must now unearth the mystery of why her mother would lie about her birth date to ward off suspicion about her ability, brush up on her history, and work with Gideon, the time traveler from a similarly gifted family that passes the gene through its male line, and whose presence becomes, in time, less insufferable and more essential. Together, Gwyneth and Gideon journey through time to discover who, in the 18th century and in contemporary London, they can trust.
