thekoolaidmom: I love the Hornblower series. Start with Mr. Midshipman Hornblower, the first in time, and I think you'll get hooked. The best for me was Beat to Quarters, although they're all great. There's also a pretty good Gregory Peck movie, Captain Horation Hornblower, and a recent ...

Mr Midshipman Hornblower?

10. Mr. Midshipman Hornblower by C.S. Forester The sixth published but first chronologically in the Hornblower series, this book covers the very beginning of Horatio Hornblower's naval service from when he was 17 to 20. The book is episodic, each chapter almost its own short story, and I was ...

read Hornblower and the Hotspur by c.s. forester. I have 3 more waiting - the Mr. Midshipman Hornblower , Admiral Hornblower in the West Indies, and the last one about the "crisis" with his notes about finishing it. This makes 133. I'm still cataloguing, so serious reading has to ...

... to the library unfinished. I haven't yet chosen a new book to start, but I will probably go with The Solitary Envoy or Mr. Midshipman Hornblower. Or both.

Here's the greatest find I didn't get: a matched set of the first three Horatio Hornblower novels in hardcover from 1939 for $1 a piece. A friend and I went to a library book sale, and I picked the other shelf. However, he's now my fiance... so perhaps I managed to snag them after all :)

I few favorites for classics I love Kidnapped, Jane Eyre, Hamlet and Midshipman Hornblower. For modern books I love Neverwhere, Sten, The Dragonbone Chair and Alanna. Manga/Graphic Novels I love Fruits Basket, Bleach, Mr. Punch and Fray

... fan myself and should really reread them more thoughly, but I'd recommend with going through the series chronologically Midshipman Hornblower (rather than Beat to Quarters). And enjoy Tolkien :)

... comment on the books past that point. I have thoroughly enjoyed them all, but I would rank the first book in the series, Mr. Midshipman Hornblower, and the collection of short stories from different parts of Hornblower's life, Hornblower during the Crisis, as my favorites up until now. I ...

In sending invites for this group to people with several of Fraser's books, I noticed that a number of them also listed the Hornblower series. Certainly not like Flashman, but I reckon Hornblower should show up as a suggestion for Flashman readers.

... follow Hornblower's career as he advances in rank. Going by publication order, I think Commodore Hornblower comes before Midshipman Hornblower. Confusing. Another problem series is McBain's 87th precinct novels. When as many as 3 were published in one year, if you aren't careful you can ...

Hurrah, some Patrick O'Brian fans! I'm fond of the Napoleonic era for the Aubrey-Maturin books, but also for the Hornblower novels and of course the incomparable Pride and Prejudice. I've His Majesty's Dragon from a friend, which I do mean to read in the next week while on vacation. ...
