I thoroughly enjoyed this book even though I guessed the murderer early into the story. The inexperienced Police "runner" John Pickett is called to the home of the Viscount Fieldhurst to find him murdered with his lovely wife Lady Julia Fieldhurst standing over his body with her friend Lord Rupert. Pickett is quite taken with the beautiful Julia and is determined to find her innocent. He makes some mistakes along the way but does figure out who the murderer is while learning how to deal with society, interrogations, and evidence before he catches the murderer. ( )

Book description
Estranged from her husband through her failure to produce an heir, Lady Fieldhurst resolves to repay his neglect by taking a lover. Fate takes a hand when she and her would-be lover enter her bedchamber to find Lord Fieldhurst lying on the floor--with her nail scissors protruding from his neck. Bow Street Runner John Pickett, twenty-four years old and new to the Bow Street force, has spent most of his brief career chasing petty thieves and pickpockets. Nothing in his experience has prepared him for low dealings in high society--or for the beautiful young widow who is the chief suspect. [retrieved 11/5/2015 from Amazon.com]
