Epigraph
Dedication
For James Bevan Russell, 1946-1984
First words
I'm back in the city for the Langton Clinic jubilee. Sipping tea in that funny group room with the yellow ceilings and the cigarette smoke and the earnest young counsellors - the old ones are all burnt out - it's hard to believe I was ever a patient. All that craving, all that time ago.
Quotations
I liked the friendly verandah and the smiling windows and the grand double lounge room, ideal for parties and brooking, two activities Jacob and Henry excelled at. Both men were unusual, middle-class boys who'd come down a peg or two and had turned their poverty into an adventure.

Disambiguation notice
This is a work of autobiographical fiction, based on real events that occurred in 1984 (that year!) in Glebe, an old suburb in Sydney's inner west.
