his book was a lot less interesting than I thought it would be. Focusing on the life of Padre Pio, an Italian who lived in the early 20th century, the book is more about the political atmosphere in which he lived and not so much about the man himself. To be fair, the author warns the reader in the beginning but I didn't have enough interest in that aspect of history to find this book anything more than painful to read. ( )

I saw this book in my local library, and checked it out to learn more about the Capuchin friar; I grew up in a family with roots in southern Italy, and particularly in Apulia, so throughout my childhood I heard stories about Padre Pio and his miracles. Unfortunately, I learned very little about Padre Pio and quite a bit about socio-historical analyses of the motivations and machinations behind the growth of the cult of Padre Pio. The man himself never quite comes into focus, although Italy in the 1920s certainly did. The subtitle should be the title of the book based on its subject matter. ( )

The book examines the background to the phenomenon of Padre Pio's status as a living saint. It doesn't address the issues of whether PP's stigmata were genuine or whether PP was a fraud or mad. But a sober assessment of the politics of Italy, the relationship of the church to the state and the mindset of the people allows you to form your own opinion. It is well written and objective. ( )
