Yet another reprint from Dover--this time a book that, for its rarity, has become a collector's item, and comparable in stature with Binyon's study of Japanese colour prints which was also first published in the early 1920s. There is, however, a difference in the treatment of the subject since the former work is given over to the description of the individual prints belong to all the more famous series produced by the masters of Ukiyo-e together with an analysis of Japanese theatre and the romantic stories of Chushingura. While this book gives a comprehensive view of the history of Japanese print and the artists who produced them, together with appendices giving data on print chronology, artists' signatures, publishers' seals, etc, it does not possess the depth of analytic understanding of Binyon. Nevertheless, it is a valuable book of reference, and at the price good value.
