Despite the fact I'm a great fan of historical romance, I very nearly skipped this book entirely, which would have been a shame.

Most novels that I have read set in and around this period have been a disappointment to me: melodramatic, two dimensional characters, who toss their heads and stamp their feet and then suddenly fall in love for no reason.

Superficially, the plot of His Rebel Bride is just the same, with a headstrong heroine, forced marriage and political intrigue, however both the hero and heroine are excellently drawn. Both develop during the story in a realistic manner, and their interactions are honest and credible. ( )
