... not as strong as the other books in the series. Book 66 Zoe's tale by John Scalzi Another story set in the world of Old Man's War. Zoe's Tale retells the story of The Last Colony from the viewpoint of the colony leaders' adopted daughter Zoe. A strong heroine provides another strong ...

In regards to some more normal SF novels, I'd suggest Old Man's War by John Scalzi and Steel Beach by John Varley. Both are excellent.

... Frankenstein by Mary Shelley via dailylit, I'm about half way finished with that one. I'm almost finished with Old Man's War by John Scalzi which so far has been a quick, fun sci fi read. And I'm a little over half way finished with To Ride Hell's Chasm which so far is a great ...

Book 60 Old Man's War by John Scalzi Man turns 75 and leaves Earth to join the military protecting humanity's colonies. A reread now that I've picked up more books in the series. Great military science fiction and highly recommended. Book 61 The Ghost Brigades by John Scalzi Sequel ...

Given your preferences, I would suggest the following starting points: * Scalzi's Old Man's War: because it is a funny, action-packed read and a bit Hienlenesque. * Vinge's Fire Upon the Deep: because it engages classic themes of space opera and first contact in a distinctive and ...

... Wurts (fantasy) Frankenstein by Mary Shelley (classics) The Forsyte Saga by John Galsworthy (classics) Old Man's War by John Scalzi (sci fi)

If there are no limits, then Ellie from Contact. Smart girls are hot. :-) And Jane Sagan from John Scalzi's Old Man's War series, she kicks a lot of butt and is incredibly fun.

... read. 91. Zoe's Tale by John Scalzi YA-A/SF (416) Zoe's Tale is another fantastic book in John Scalzi's Old Man's War universe. Zoe is the adopted daughter of John Perry and Jane Sagan, who are chosen to head up a colony on a new planet. Except things don't go exactly as ...

... State of the Art. Bit of a mixed bag, definitely different from what I'm used to from Iain Banks. Now reading: Old Man's War. Got that one because Zoe's Tale kept popping up in recommendations. Also still reading Collapse. A bit slow at times, but still very interesting.

Just picked up John Scalzi's The Last Colony. I enjoyed the first two, Old Man's War and The Ghost Brigades, and have been reading good things on LT about the 4th, Zoe's Tale.

Working my way through Old Man's War again so I can finally pick up the sequels.

Recently finished Zoe's Tale by John Scalzi, fitting conclusion to the Old Man's War series. Now reading Eyes of the Calculor by Sean McMullen, and being blown away again by his inventiveness and world-building. Methinks the Greatwinter trilogy isn't as well known as it ...

#30: ZOE'S TALE by John Scalzi Unlike the other Old Man's War novels, this is not a standalone -- you need to have read The Ghost Brigades and The Last Colony at least. This is Zoe Boutin-Perry's perspective on the events in those two books. A good tie-in with The Last Colony, a ...

well i enjoyed old man's war a good deal, so i cast a losing vote for Zoe's Tale.

... I don't know if Zoe's War is OK as a standalone. I haven't read it yet. The books in the series are: The Old Man's War The Ghost Brigades The Last Colony Zoe's War The previous 3 are all out in mmpb for about $7-$8 each.

Thanks. I have The Android's Dream but have not read it yet. I will do so and see about counting it instead of Old Man's War. Also, I will be trying Hitchhiker again, with lowered expectations and more patience. See how far I get.

Old Man's War, The Last Colony and Zoe's Tale by John Scalzi. (The Ghost Brigades was in third-person.) Parts of Ilium by Dan Simmons were told in first-person. Also Julian May's Rampart Worlds series - Perseus Spur et al. Stanislaw Lem's short stories about Ijon Tichy (The Star D ...

... Gibson's writing has defn. improved over time. Zoe's Tale is going mass market in a couple of days in the US. I liked Old Man's War a good deal. And then i can pass the copy on to the friend who passed on her copy of OMWar to me! So I'll add one nom for Zoe's Tale.

I just read Old Man's War by John Scalzi. I can give very good recommendation for it. By the way, books by C. J. Cherryh might be very good, I have read a few, but I really wouldn't recommend them as first science fiction books for someone who likes Back to the Future part 2 and Harry Pott ...

... OK?). Also I'm hoping to get some decent cooking done so at least I can have a good meal. And reading. Halfway through Old Man's War I have a hard time put it down. Getting work done will need lots of self-control ;-)

I had decided to read a pick from my non-fiction TBR but after carrying it with me one day I decided I'd rather read Old Man's War instead. So that it is.

I have three of your recent books on my TBR list: Old Man's War, Watchmen, and Quicksilver.

Sneaked by the SF Bookshop today, to pick up The Eyre Affair for the group read, and Old Man's War, just because (or - because Jasper said he thought it a wow! book and I've been meaning to read it for a while...).

I just discovered John Scalzi this month and am devouring everything he's published so far. The 1st 1/3 of Old Man's War had me setting the book down and saying 'Holy Shirt!' for the first time in several years. Very Heinleinesque. He has a Brilliant blog too that's worth a daily looksee. ...

Old Man's War by John Scalzi and its sequel The Ghost Brigades, both really good. Looking forward to the third one, The Last Colony.
