Gentle story of a young girl who works to get her mother a different kind of Mother's Day present. The fact that this happy family is Jewish and lives in Poland in the 1930s adds poignancy.

[SPOILER] Although the main plot conflict seems to be how Sara will earn enough money to buy the beautiful slippers that her mother would never buy for herself, the more important conflict is between generations. Mama believes that gifts should be handmade and Sara wants to give something valued for itself and not for who made it. When Mama realizes that Sara earned the money for the present by sewing for family and friends, she accepts the gift graciously. As I said, it's a sweet, gentle, poignant story. ( )
