Damn it. Daniele was right again. I was looking for a good italian writer, someone that had something to tell, and know how to tell it, and he pointed me to Baricco, especially this book. Well, this is it! The only temporary laps of fantasy is in the title. The rest is just sublime.

This story is about Ultimo, the first (!) son of an italian farmer. It's a memorable account of life, located in the early 1900, across the World Wars. It is a sublime rendering of how special human beings are. It's a story about passion and meaning.

Greatest highlight is the rendering of the Caporetto retreat; when I read it I could not refrain myself from thinking what a great subject History would be, if thought that way. It's in the words of a novelist, not in the ones of a historian, that true history is written.

Or maybe the missing final climax, when the final meeting between all characters is lost, because Ultimo is too busy making love with a bar tender. ( )
