"Excellent....These Joe Grey mysteries will stay popular for many years to come." --Tampa Tribune   Kirkus Reviews says that award-winning author Shirley Rousseau Murphy has "raised the stakes of the feline sleuth genre." In Cat Playing Cupid, Murphy's fourteenth delightfully sophisticated whodunit to feature Joe Grey and his furry friends Dulcie and Kit, the feline P.I. is on a mission to stop a crime spree that endangers love on Valentine's Day. The winner of seven straight Muse Medallions from the national Cat Writers Association, Murphy's Joe Grey novels are the "cat's meow"--as doggone good as Rita Mae Brown's "Sneaky Pie," Carole Nelson Douglas's "Midnight Louie," and Lilian Jackson Braun's The Cat Who...books.… (more)

Fun little cozy that's part "Warriors" (the MG cat novels, not the movie) and part "The Cat Who". In these mysteries, the cats talk and have a sort of mythical/mystical back story. Though not as cleverly written as the first Cat Who novels, I would read more of these. ( )

This is an interesting story. I very much enjoyed the characters, who were were well-fleshed out, and the background story. The writing style is easy-to-read, allowing for a quick read. I recommend this book. ( )

Ryan and Clyde get marries on Valentine's Day. Fortunately there honeymoon in the California wine country, while expensive because of all the antiques they buy, is uneventful.. The events are taking place back in Molina Point! Ryan's dad, Mike Flannery, is now working the the MPPD on cold cases and one gets kind of personal. He rediscovered an old flame whose former fiance disappeared the day before the wedding. With help from all, clues crop up to point the at the right perpetrator. Of course, one of the main witnesses and aiders is non other than Joe Grey and he's not talking - well, he is, but he can't, if you know what I mean.

Meanwhile a feral cat named Sage is found terribly hurt after a vicious cat fight. Sage grew up with Kit and therein lies another possible romance.

Read on as the events unfold and things come together in another wonderful tale of murder, mayhem and talking cats. ( )

Epigraph
Cupid drew from his quiver two arrows of different workmanship-one to excite love, the other to repel it. The former was of gold and sharp pointed, the latter blunt and tipped with lead. With the leaden shaft he struck the nymph Daphne...and with the golden one [he pierced] Apollo...Forthwith the god was seized with love for the maiden, but she, more than ever, abhorred the thought of loving.

Charles Mills Gayley, The Classic Myths in English Literature and in Art, 1893, Ginn and Company
Dedication
For E. L. T.,
who runs faster, climbs higher, eats more greedily, is more loving, and sleeps with her paws in the air. May your Joy last forever.
First words
The newspaper clipping was yellowed and tearing at the folds, though it had been handled carefully over the years by the detectives who worked the case or who, during the preceding decade, had taken a fresh look at the cold file, reading the missing report on Carson Chappell, and making additional inquiries.
