Interesting suspense novel that wraps in global warming, political ambition, and religious fervor all into a plot to trick the world. It was a good book but it got a bit preachy in the end. a little too preachy for me... The Sign (reaction) By Cory Radley During the course of my 2009 summer break I chose to read The Sign by Raymond Khoury, author of the screenplay The Last Templar from the Indiana Jones Trilogy. I must say that in total it was an excellent book and the plot kept me guessing right until the last page. The Sign was set in multiple venues, which was nice to see Raymond keeping adventure alive, these venues namely being Boston, D.C., Huston, Egypt, and Antarctica. Quite the adventure indeed especially considering the mystery was that of an unexplained apparition in the shape of a ball of light that morphed into a sign over a collapsing glassier in the Antarctic. This later turned out to be a plot to rid the world of religion by installing fanaticism and then exposing the sign as a fake. The style of the novel used a system that had multiple independent story lines that converged at the climax. This was one of my favorite parts of the novel because of the timing that it provided, just as I was getting tired of the slow moving mystery in Egypt, the book jumped to Boston to a gun blazing car chase with a 60’s Bullet fast back Mustang. I found myself reading almost half of the book in a day and a half, which is a rare occurrence for me. The story line that I most enjoyed was that of the character Matt who was looking for his brother whom he thought had been killed in a helicopter crash but in fact was being press ganged into working on the technology to create the sign. His storyline, set in Boston, was constantly pact with action with multiple gunfights against a politician’s private army constructed of ex Force Recon Marines who even ended up separating an unsuspecting privateer from his arm with the use of a remote controlled, unmanned helicopter called a sky cam. This was excellent because it kept me interested in the book instead of bogging everything down with too much plot complexity at one time. It allowed the story to grow on you by letting the epicenter of the plot get momentum by distracting you with a much higher octane and shallower plotline that was constantly flaming up. One thing that I did not like was the overall message of distrust in religion and government that the novel sent out, like a bad guest. This book most definitely has a message of distrust in the government most likely because of the current economic resection. This is a message that I don’t appreciate because, if anything, positivity and solutions are the way to go rather than distrust. However, this did not keep me from enjoying the book’s action packed adventure. Furthermore, I would recommend the book to anybody who is looking for a good, entertaining read filled to the brim with action, adventure, and a twist at every turn of the page to keep you on the edge of your seat. What a disappointment. If you have an incomplete cliche' list you can finish it with this book. Perhaps there is a master book of the usual suspects doing the usual things for the usual reasons and the author merely built a story around what he found there. There was one anomaly though. The 'media' was portrayed as righteous in The Sign, and maybe this book was meant to be published as humor. Sorry for the sarcasm but I expected more. no reviews | add a review
