Although Tal Jefferson is the ostensible star of this series, my favorite character is her admin/assistant/protege June Atkins. And June is front and center in Yes, the River Knows, the second in this cozy series (with a smattering of coarse language).

June's estranged husband winds up dead and June is jailed in the murder. When authorities learn that her ex might have been fencing stolen goods, the prosecutor figures he might as well throw the book at her for that -- and at Tal, too. Tal would not be voted Miss Congeniality in her hometown of Wynnton, South Carolina -- but she seems to be a favorite of a local "boy" who's made good as a portrait painter. He wants to paint her ... and maybe something more. Tal isn't so certain she wants to go down that road.

This is a light read, with fast-paced action, the usual "damsel in danger" scenario, and a bit of offbeat romance. Tal is an endearing character -- but June is every bit her equal in the brains, courage and tactlessness. She's till my favorite. ( )

Amazon.com Product Description (ISBN 0425205770, Hardcover)

Leaving the big city and coming back to South Carolina was the best thing attorney Tal Jefferson ever did. Even though she's still haunted by the ghosts of her past, she's finally given up the booze and started letting the tranquility of her hometown work its way through her veins. But her life is thrust back into turmoil when she and a high school acquaintance make a gruesome discovery in the Wynnton River. A man has been murdered-and soon, he's identified as the estranged husband of Tal's fierce-hearted secretary, June Atkins. In a town full of racism and self-delusion, Tal will have to clear June's name and save them both from a murderer who'll do anything to save himself.
