Not bad, but I just didn't get into it. Nicely written, playing on the Jack the Ripper theme, genteel but now poverty striken Darcie has been reduced to being grateful to get a maid of all sorts job for the good doctor, but his mysterious comings and goings and grusome illustrations cause a lot of whispers amongst the servants (even though he is generous with coal and gives them clean sheets) Darcie falls in love with him almost inevitably. It's more confusing to see what he sees in her. And the end is so melodramatic and over the top that it kind of betrays the grounded details of the beginning. Not a total waste of time, more an interesting failure. ( )
