This memoir is one path into understanding the agony suffered by intellectuals and peacemakers in Vietnam before, during, and after the American war there. I was moved and sometimes horrified by the terrible choices this young woman faced, and her apparent courage. That said, there is something oddly defensive in the tone. Now and then she mentions rumors and accusations spread against her, which makes me wonder if part of her intent was to clear her name or even, at times, place blame elsewhere. The style is at times clumsy, but that does not diminish the power of her story.
