"Once upon a time there was a little boy, and his name was Little Rajani. And his mother was called Ramita. And his father was called Kapaali." Except for the names Bannerman's charming folktale like text remains unchanged. Also gone are her stereotypical caricatures, leaving a cheerful and reassuring children's story set in India. ( )

Amazon.com Product Description (ISBN 0375827196, Hardcover)

When a little boy named Rajani ventures into the jungle, he runs into several tigers who make him give them his fine new red coat, blue trousers, purple shoes with crimson linings, and even his green umbrella! But Rajani outsmarts the tigers in the end, in this kinder retelling of Helen Bannerman’s Little Black Sambo. New illustrations and non-offensive names and character depictions make this story lovable again.

(retrieved from Amazon Mon, 30 Sep 2013 13:31:45 -0400)

After giving four hungry tigers his beautiful new clothes so they won't eat him, Rajani finds them engaged in a fierce fight about who is the grandest, which proves to be their undoing.
