Best Intentions: Unintended Pregnancy and the Well-Being of Children and Families ... stuff. To me, spooky and suspenseful means guys like Richard Matheson and Charles Beaumont, and then toss in Roald Dahl's TALES OF THE UNEXPECTED, a few of Jerome Bixby's finest short efforts...
For me, the dreary days of fall inspire me more toward spy and espionage novels--Le Carre is fun ... #125/126 I read Tales of the Unexpected years ago - I think that it contains quite a few of the stories RebeccaAnn has listed above - I definitely recognised your descriptions of "Lamb to the Slaughter" and "The Sound Machine" - RebeccaAnn, your review did make me want to go and root the book out ... I didn't know about Tales of the Unexpected, or if I did, I forgot. I'll see if my library has this one. Thanks for mentioning it. ... if it was real or just the boy's imagination.
I have another one of his anthologies of short stories coming. It's called Tales of the Unexpected, which sounds like it's right up my alley. ... early years autobiography, Boy.
In terms of his adult works, I've read most of his short stories, including all the Tales of the Unexpected and Kiss Kiss, Switch Bitch and I think there are others. Most are incredibly dark and twisted, and leave you feeling slightly disturbed. However ... ... he laughed and laughed reading it. Have any of you read his adult books? I love his short stories. Umbrella Man and Unexpected Tales - Dahl are the ones I read. I can't find the title of the other book! It was with the autobiographies.
