For Kilmeny had been she knew
not where,
And Kilmeny had seen what she
could not declare,
Kilmeny had been where the cock
never crew,
Where the rain never fell, and the wind
never blew,
But it seemed as the harp of the sky
had rung,
And the airs of heaven played round
her tongue,
When she spoke of the lovely forms she
had seen,
And a land where love had never been,
A land of love, and a land of light,
Withouten sun, or moon, or light;
Where the river swa'd a living stream,
And the light a pure celestial beam;
The land of vision it would seem,
A still, an everlasting dream.

Three stories and a poem from the early 19th century, by the author of "The Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner".

The Brownie of the Black Haggs
The Cameronian Preachers Tale
Mary Burnet
Kilmeny

Tales of murder, supernatural retribution, and women taken away to fairyland, featuring ghosts, brownies, fairies and changelings. Very enjoyable although there was a fair bit of Scots dialect that I found quite hard to follow. Luckily some of the words and phrases used in the poem were translated. ( )
