The theme of the story is that we all can find our way in this world, especially with a nurturing start. I liked the book because the author was able to infuse both narrative and informational style writing that informed the reader about facts on seals. The author’s use of descriptive words, along with the illustrations, helps the reader to visualize the appearance of a newborn seal. For example, on page 13 the author says “He is a week old. His fur is a sleek gray, speckled all over with brown,” which gives the reader a visualization of the young seal. I also enjoyed the story line and how the author was able to describe the story through the perspective of a young seal making his way in the world while also still informing the reader about important facts. This includes facts like “Harbor seal pups are good swimmers from birth” which explains the reason why the pup can go straight into the water to escape danger from the beach. The illustrations also helped the reader confirm their visualizations they gained from the words. ( )

Summary: This story is about a young seal pup who is going through the motions of life. I could use this book to talk about sea/land creatures. I could also use this book to allows students to see similarities between young and their moms and my own students and their parents. This book is a good example of an informational because all of the story is true but it is told in story form. It is also a good example because of the use of the illustrations.

Seal Pup Grows Up is a good informational fiction book because it tells you about how seals grow up in the wild and what might happen to them the information is all based on real seal pups however they pup in the book does talk to his mom which makes it fictional.

I would use this book when giving out a essay or research paper.
I would also use his book when discussing animal families

This is a story about a baby seal and his time growing up with his mom. The baby seal stays close by to his mother when they are on shore napping or in the water getting food and playing. This book gives a lot of information about a baby seal when it is first born and growing up. It would be a good book to use for a project. I would not use this for a lesson plan but for a research project on animals or something along the lines of that. The illustrations are simple but capture the look of a seal pretty well. ( )
